Most of what you see in the onX Fish App or Web Map is built from two key data types: Basemaps and Map Layers.
-
Basemaps show the terrain—roads, lakes, mountains, cities, etc.
-
Map Layers add extra info on top, like wildfire activity, air quality, public land boundaries, and more.
How to Change Basemaps
You can switch between Basemaps at any time via the Layers menu. To do this, tap the Layers icon in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.
You’ll see three options:
-
Topo: Topographic map with elevation lines and lakebed contours.
-
Hybrid: Satellite imagery with a topo overlay.
-
Aerial: Satellite imagery.
💡 Best for lake depth: Use the Topo Basemap when you want to view lakebed contours and topography.
If depth contours aren't shown for a specific lake with the Topo or Hybrid Basemap(s) selected, there's no data available for the lake in question.
Imagery options
For Hybrid and Aerial Basemaps, you can toggle between high-quality and recent imagery sets.
-
High Quality: High-res imagery, 1–3 years old on average
-
Recent: Medium-res imagery from as recently as two weeks ago, viewable in bi-weekly sets back to March 2023
💡 Tip: to scroll through older imagery, tap the arrows next to the date range on the map.
Using the Web Map
Using a laptop or desktop? You can change Basemaps and Map Layers by clicking the Layers icon in the lower right corner of your screen after logging into the Web Map from onxmaps.com/fish.
